IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS

A. Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. Entrance Test

  • Candidate for the Ph.D. degree entrance test must have a Master’s degree of the Kumaun University (hereafter referred to as University) or of any other University Incorporated by the law in force and recognized by the UGC; provided also that the candidate:
  • Candidate should have secured at least fifty five percent (55%) marks (without rounding off) or a grade point average equivalent to 55% marks (without rounding off) at the Master’s Degree examination. For Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to non-creamy layer /SC/ST/Physically Handicapped (PH)/Visually Handicapped (VH) Candidates, the minimum marks shall be 50% (without rounding off).
  • Candidates appearing/appeared in PG Final Year Semester Exam of the Kumaun University or its affiliated colleges/ institutions may also apply provisionally for the Ph.D. Entrance Examination (as per recommendations of Academic Council, Point 02, dated 06.03.2013).
  • Candidate is a regular teaching faculty member having served the Kumaun University for a period of minimum of one year in the University or the Colleges/Institutions affiliated to the Kumaun University as per University/State Govt. Rules.
  • A candidate shall ordinarily be permitted to work for the Ph.D. Degree in the subject in which he/she has obtained Master’s Degree, however, research work leading to Ph.D. Degree may also be allowed in allied subjects in the same or any other Faculty, if the Research Degree Committee (RDC) concerned is satisfied that the candidate possesses the requisite qualifications to take up the proposed research work. Allied subject for the above stated purpose must have been approved by the Academic Council of the University.

B. Procedure for Admission:


The candidates shall be selected for registration into the Ph.D. degree (i) Through Research Entrance Test (RDET) or (ii) Direct Admission (without appearing in RDET). Procedure for admission will be as follows:


Through Research Degree Entrance Test (RDET)

  • Research Degree Entrance Test (RDET): To test the research aptitude of the candidate in related subject a written examination of 100 marks is conducted by the University. The total duration of this examination shall be of 02 hrs.
  • Paper shall contain 100 objectives/multiple-choice type questions and each question shall carry one mark with no negative marking.
  • No scrutiny/revaluation of the answer sheet of the written test shall be conducted.
  • The Qualifying Percentage of Marks in the Entrance Examination will be as under -General-50%, OBC-45% and SC/ST/VH/PH - 40%.
  • Admission to the Ph.D. programme in each subject shall be made strictly according to RDET merit against the available seats in the concerned subject in the university campus and affiliated colleges.
  • Reservation Policy of the State of Uttarakhand shall be followed.

Direct Admission (RDET Exempted- without appearing in RDET)


  • Direct Admission (RDET-Exempted): A candidate who has qualified UGC-CSIR-JRF or equivalent national test shall be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. programme without appearing in Research Degree Entrance Test (RDET) but shall apply by filling the online form of Ph.D. entrance examination with fees- within due date.
  • A regularly appointed permanent teacher having served the Kumaun University or the affiliated college for a period of minimum of one year as a regular teacher as per University/State Government rules shall also be exempted from the Ph.D. Entrance Test but are also required to apply online with fees and shall be considered together with other candidates at the time of counseling for allotment of supervisor.

C. List of documents to be enclosed with the application form

  • Bank receipt of online fee deposit of Rs. 2000/-
  • Self attested PDF copy of High School and Last Degree obtained,JRF certificates or mark sheet etc should be uploaded with online form.
  • Certificate in support of reservation category PDF upload with online form.

D. General Instructions

  • The candidates must read the conditions of eligibility as given at item No. A carefully and must satisfy themselves regarding their eligibility for the Ph.D. Entrance Test before filling the application form.
  • Candidates will be issued the Admission Card online by the Kumaun University after allotment of test venue. Candidates should note that their candidature is strictly provisional. The mere fact that Admission Card has been issued to any candidate shall not imply that the Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy Cell has finally accepted his/her candidature.
  • The university may change the centre(s) or date of examination without assigning any reason.
  • Online Application Form must be complete in all respects as per the Notification. Incomplete Application Forms will be rejected.
  • Applications submitted on any other format/mode will not be accepted.
  • A print-out of duly filled online application form should also be sent by Speed Post to the Director, Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy Cell (SRICC), Kumaun University, Nainital-263001 (Uttarakhand) along with all documents such as category certificate for (OBC/SC/ST/PH/VH category candidates), mark sheet of qualifying and/or JRF examination, high school certificate and Bank receipt of Examination fees (Rs.2000/-).
  • Applications received after the last date i.e. 22th February, 2018 will not be entertained. Therefore, it is requested to pay examination fee positively by 21 February, 2018.
  • The use of calculators or Log Tables is not permitted. Mobile phones, pagers and electronic devices etc. are not allowed in the Examination Hall/Room.
  • Candidates should ensure that the signatures appended and duly signed photograph uploaded/pasted by them in all the places, viz. in their Application Form and OMR sheet, be identical and there should be no variation of any kind.
  • All legal disputes pertaining to this Test shall fall within the jurisdiction of Hon'ble High Court of Uttarakhand, Nainital only.
  • Applicants are advised to visit university website www.kunainital.ac.in with attached link Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy Cell regularly for any further announcement and notices. Dissemination of such information at personal level or via newspapers will not be possible.

  • The decision of the university shall be final in all matters.
  • The university reserves the right to increase or decrease the number of seats at the time of Counseling.

How To Apply
  • Please make sure that you are eligible to write the RDET-2018 before depositing the Fees. Refer to IMPORTANT INFORMATION page on this website for details of eligibility.
  • Fees for RDET-2018 and RDET(Exempted)-2018 is Rs. 2000/- (Two thousand) which is not refundable, once deposited.
  • You need an in-service Mobile Number and Email Id to complete the Application process, so you should have both before start of Fee Payment.
  • You also have to upload your High School Certificate, Category Certificate (if not GENERAL category candidate) and your P.G. qualification Mark Sheet. If you have not completed your P.G. Degree at this point of time, then you have to upload your latest semester/year Mark Sheet. Size of each document should not be more than 100 kb.
  • You should also have your passport (PP) size photograph and Signature in JPEG format. Make sure all Images should be less than 40 kb in size.
  • To apply for RDET-2018 or RDET(Exempted)-2018, you should pay the Fee first through State Bank of India Fee Payment portal. Click on button Pay Fee and Provide required information as asked by the SBI.
  • Information given to State Bank of India at the time of Fee payment cannot be changed at later stage. As such be very careful while filling up Fee Payment Form.
  • Date of Birth given at the time of Fee payment will be required for online application after Fee Payment. It should be in DD-MM-YYYY format only.
  • Fee can be paid on-line through Net Banking/credit Card/debit Card or by depositing cash at any Branch of State bank of India. Choose appropriate method that suits you.
  • To deposit the Fee in cash, you will have to take print out of the Challan and go to nearest SBI Branch for Payment.
  • You can apply for RDET:2018 after at least 24 hours of Fee deposit. To complete you Application, click on the Button ¬ Apply online and follow the instructions. You will have to submit Fee Payment Challan number (a 10-digit number given by the SBI starting with 'DU') and Date of Birth (given at the time of Fee payment) to start the Application submission.
  • When you finally submit the Application, a unique Registration Number will be assigned to you and notified to you through SMS and Email service immediately. Keep it safely as the Registration Number would be required for further Login instances thereafter.
